Finger Knitted Coasters/ Trivets

Finger knitting is a super fun and easy alternative to knitting which can be totally hard depending on your skill set. Finger knitting can also be taught to kiddos and there are a handful of projects that can be done. With everyone being home, we are cooing a lot more and we are in the need of having trivets and coasters because we do not want to ruin any furniture!

I love the simplicity of this and the handmade feel of these coasters. It reminds me of potholders that we used to make when we were kiddos on those looms. The best part is that you can make these in no time! Like less than a half hour and you only need yarn to make this project happen. You can also probably use rope to create this project as well.

Supplies:

-Thick Yarn (tee shirt or rope)

-Scissors

Finger Knitting

If you are using tee shirt yarn, you will need to double up that way it will be harder and more sturdy. You will also only be using two finger finger knitting. Leaving 8” of tail wrap the yarn over your forefinger and back and around your middle finger. Continue to wrap the yarn around your forefinger and back and around the middle, leaving two loops on each finger (including the tail)

Lift the bottom strand over the upper strand and your middle finger. Bring the tail between the fore and middle finger.

Next, wrap the rope around your forefinger and then back and around the middle finger. Lift the lower strand above the top strand and off your middle finger. Repeat that for your forefinger as well.

Continue this pattern for approximately 100 rows to create a trivet and 55 rows for a coaster. To complete this piece, cut about a 10” piece off the ball of yarn and bring the yarn under your forefinger and middle finger, pulling the loops off your finger and pulling tightly.

Assemble The Trivet

To assemble your trivet/ coaster bring the 8” tail from the start of the knitting through one of the strands of the fifth row of the finger knit. Pull so that that trivet comes to a coil but not tightly that the coil bunches.

Keeping the finger knitting strand wrapped snugly to itself all the way around the coil, thread the tail through one loop of finger knitting again directly across from where the strand is. Continue in this pattern until you reach the end and you meet the end strand. Pull through the last coil of your finger knitting. By now you should have a full circle! You can easily tie a knot here at the top and then weave the ends through the back of the coaster/ trivet.

You can make a bunch of these in all different colors and use them all over the house. There is nothing better than a handmade coaster or a handmade trivet to put your cups and pots on. I think these would make an amazing house warming gift as well as to be used in your own home. They are perfectly easy to make with kiddos or even virtually with friends!
