Cardboard Pom Pom Makers

Everyone knows that I am also the pom pom queen. Pom poms are super important to me, to be honest. I love how aesthetically pleasing it is to get a perfectly round orb shaped pom pom and the enjoyment of creating something so cute out of just wrapping yarn. I have A DIY on her for making pom poms using Clover Pom Pom Makers. I figured with people being home and stores being closed that people may not have pom pom makers. What people probably do have is cardboard, because everyone is online shopping. 

I figured that I would show you how to make a pom and then it can be something that you make everyday to represent Corona 2020. You can then turn it into a garland and decorate your space with it! 

Supplies

-Cardboard

-Packaging Tape

-Embroidery Floss 

Making the Cardboard Pom Maker 

I styled my pom pom maker off of a LOOME tool because I have one at home and know how versatile of a toll it is. I also love the way it makes pom poms. I figured with the maker being this way, it would be a lot easier to tie and cut the pom off the tool. 

I have attached a template from a tracing of a LOOME tool. Trace this onto a piece of paper, cut it out and then trace and cut it onto the cardboard. I taped the arms of the tool with some packaging tape to make it a little more sturdy. 

Making the Pom Pom

Wrap the yarn around the arms of the tool. For a dense pom pom, wrap about 160 times around the arms (I know that sounds like a lot but trust me. For a smaller pom, wrap less. I wrapped about 100 times for this size pom pom Make sure you are wrapping evenly and not too tight where the arms move close together. 

While the yarn is wrapped around the maker, tie it tightly in the middle using the embroidery floss. Slide the yarn off the arms and flip it over. Tie a second very tight knot on the other side. 

With scissors, cut through the looped ends on both sides. It will look very shaggy and uneven but have no fear because you will trim! 

Before you trim the pom, very gently fluff the pom all the way around with your fingers to untuck the strands. Now, over a bowl, trim your pom pom sides into a perfect circle. Gently fluff the pom as you are trimming and trim it down to the density that you want. Cut the yarn off all the way around and make sure that it is the same density all the way around. Gently fluff when you finish trimming. 

The trimming process can take upwards of 15 minutes depending on how much you want to invest in the trimming. I suggest getting a really good pair of scissors that way you can perfectly trim without feeling frustrated by the scissors. Sometimes I even like to use embroidery scissors because they are often very sharp. 

The best part of all of this is how quickly you can make pom poms. This technique allows for you to churn out pom poms in no time at all. So while you are sitting in your down time watching some Gilmore Girls, you can probably make like 5 pom poms. The hardest part is making sure the middle knot is tight enough, but other than that this craft is a dream.
