DIY T-shirt Yarn

Get ready to transform a t-shirt that you never wear anyway into chunky yarn for crocheting, knitting or weaving! I went through my closet recently and got rid of a bunch of tees, but a few were very sentimental to me. I wanted to make a quilt, but with us doing frugal April and a need for yarn for weavings, this DIY is going to have us rolling t-shirt yarn for years to come! I also feel like maybe making a blanket out of the shirts that are sentimental to me could be just as cool!!

Supplies

  • Scissors

  • T- shirt (preferably without seams!)

Step One:

Lay your t-shirt out on a work surface. Cut a horizontal line directly under the sleeves. Also feel free to cut off the hem at the bottom of the t- shirt because that seam will be weird in the yarn. The middle section is all that you need for this project so you can discard the top and bottom. (We will eventually make pot holder looms using tee shirts so you can save the sleeves if you want!)

Step Two:

Fold one side of the t-shirt towards the other leaving a 1 in space at the top. Cut into strips (about 1 inch thick- you can use a ruler to measure)- DO NOT cut the space at the top.

Step Three:

Unfold the t-shirt so you can see the separate strip. Begin cutting the strips diagonally across. Starting at the first strip, cut diagonally to the second strip and repeat across until you are at the bottom.

Step Four:

Now that you have your strips of yarn, you can pull it through your hands to create the tube-like shape. This helps the edges to curl.

Step Five:

Keep pulling until your entire tee shirt is tube shaped! Roll the yarn into a ball and get ready to get crafting.

I honestly cannot believe how easy making this yarn is! It gives the artwork a bit of a different vibe than regular yarn does but it still gets the job done. It is the perfect way to re-purpose and to save a significant amount of money on yarn! XOXO Homebodies
