Interesting Things
My Co Star App this morning said to me “Are you giving more than you are getting?” This is a regular theme in my life because I am a giver, that is just who I am. I often lean more towards giving and taking care of others, than taking care of myself! I made a post in late January describing how I had been giving myself nothing for months and trying to give to others to get what I needed. My self care was completely in the dumps and in turn I went in the dumps because I was not getting anything back! This entire month I have worked super hard on my self care routine and was making sure that my input matched my output. So for every time I took care or gave to someone else I made sure that I took care and gave to myself.
This past week KC was getting a pretty big surgery. We had known about it for a while and so we were prepared for everything that could have happened. There has been a lot me taking care and giving myself over to making sure he was comfortable and happy. I have been super cognizant of making sure I was meeting my own needs as well. It does not have to be some huge experience of self care. I have been taking very small steps such as taking a shower, drinking enough water, eating food that you love, reading a book, watching T.V. when he was sleeping, I even went to a workout class when we got home to give myself some time and space. It has made my time taking care of someone feel less like a “job” and more like a bonding experience and something that can be fun! We have still also made sure to spend time together during this time. We have lots of movies and television shows planned that we can’t wait to watch together. We have many self care things that we plan to do together as well.
Ultimately what I am getting to is that taking care of people can be totally fun, but you have to take care of yourself in the process. Give yourself the space that you need as well as some alone time. That makes for your taking care experience to be positive and there will be a lot less feelings because you are tired, hungry or haven’t had your chance to shower. Take the time to give and make sure that you get what you need.
